We know that aromatherapy is effective in reducing stress and balancing emotions, but are there other ways we can incorporate essential oils into our household routines? Jaime Vinson RN, HN-BC, Allen County Chair, Holistic Nursing Committee; Nurse Leader, Inpatient Rehabilitation, Parkview Hospital Randallia, has some ideas, complete with recipes.
Fight the fall cold:
Mix cinnamon and clove for a blend that not only can energize and lift a mood, but is also known for its antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties. The scent is perfect for this upcoming fall weather, and it can ease the symptoms of bronchitis and the common cold as well. Try placing a few drops of the blend in your vacuum bag before you vacuum, or diffuse the scent in a cool-mist diffuser.
Keep the monsters away:
Put 10 drops lemon oil, 4 drops chamomile oil, ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract and 2-4 ounces of water in a spray bottle. Shake well, and let your child spray this homemade repellant around their bedroom to keep the monsters away! Chamomile can help calm an upset child, lemon reduces stress, and the addition of vanilla makes nighttime smell like a yummy lemon cookie!
Stop congestion with a steam facial:
Fill your bathroom sink with warm water and add 1-2 drops of peppermint, eucalyptus, or rosemary to the basin. Stand with your face at least one foot above the water and inhale deeply for a few minutes. You can even drape a towel over your head to trap the steam.
