Portion Sizes

You already know that proper nutrition can enhance your athletic performance. However, a well-balanced diet isn’t just about eating foods rich in protein, carbohydrates, calcium and other important nutrients. It’s also good to take in these nutrients in appropriate amounts and proper portion sizes.

Measuring cups and food scales can help you determine what a portion should look like. When you don’t have access to these tools, your hand can be just as effective.

Here are some tips to help you measure portion sizes using your hand:

One fingertip = 1 teaspoon of butter, mayonnaise or oil

One thumb tip = 1 Tablespoon of salad dressing or peanut butter

One palm = 3 ounces of meat, fish or poultry

One fist = 1 cup of vegetables or fruit

One handful = 1 ounce of nuts
